Character Interview: Sobek from Priestess of the Nile, by Veronica Scott
Book Name and Author:
Priestess of the Nile by Veronica Scott
Character Name:
Sobek the Egyptian Crocodile God
What was your life like growing up?
I didn’t really *grow* up. I was one of the creators of the world, depending on which Egyptian legends you believe. So I arrived full grown out of Chaos.
Before your story began, what were your hopes for the future?
There are other gods who are now more prominent. I report to the goddess Isis on my work maintaining the Nile River. I really had no hopes, just planned to keep roaming the Nile.
What changed that?
One day I heard a beautiful song and when I was irresistibly drawn to find out who had such a marvelous voice, I met Merys, the human woman who taught me about true love.
How would you describe your personality?
Fiercely protective, efficient, no nonsense. I get the job done.
How would you describe your looks?
In my fully shifted state, I am a 30’ iridescent white crocodile. In my half shifted state, I have the body of a man and the head of a crocodile. I wear a plumed headdress in that guise. As a human man (which very few people are ever allowed to see), I’m tall, with pale green eyes and straight black hair to my shoulders. Merys says I look like a warrior. She seems to like my human appearance.
What’s your greatest talents?
It’s my job to keep the Nile river flowing smoothly, removing sand bars, etc. I also have the ability to protect the pharaohs of Egypt from black magic.
Who are your closest friends?
Merys is my best friend and partner in life. Besides her, I’m closest to Horus, the falcon god and Anubis, the jackal. We’ve stood together as shield mates in many a battle.
Who do you love?
Merys, a kind, loving human woman, descended from a long line of priestesses. She has a beautiful voice and always finds the best in a situation.
Who do you hate, and why?
The sworn enemy of Egypt in the time when I met Merys was a people called the Hyksos, who wanted to conquer the land of the Nile. I stand with my fellow gods and the current pharaoh in working to repel the Hyksos’ armies. And of course I have personal reasons for hating them, which are explained pretty well in Priestess of the Nile.
What do you think is going to happen next?
My fondest wish is for Merys to dwell in contentment with me in the home of the gods. I’ll continue to uphold my duties to the Nile, for the good of the people of Egypt. And I’m sure I’ll be called into action against the Hyksos.
